French Open day nine: Stosur overcomes Henin

  • Australian knocks out four-time champion Henin
  • Djokovic and Nadal safely through to quarter-finals

Samantha Stosur knocked out Justine Henin to book her place in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros where she will meet world number one Serena Williams.

The Australian lost the first set to Henin before bouncing back taking the second and third set to eventually win the match 2-6 6-1 6-4.

Stosur, 26,  who reached the semi-finals last year in Paris, will look to go all the way this year despite never making a Grand Slam final.

It was the Belgium’s first defeat at the French Open since 2004 but despite feeling disappointed by the defeat, she believes the superior player won today.

“Of course it’s disappointing,” Henin said.

“It’s never easy to lose, especially in this kind of situation. I just wanted so much to let the adventure keep going.

“I haven’t been at my best today and Samantha was the best player on the court. She took her chances.”

In other news at Roland Garros on day nine, Rafael Nadal made light work of 24th seed Thomaz Bellucci, winning in straight sets 6-2 7-5 6-4.

Serbian Novak Djokovic joins the Spaniard in the quarter-finals of the mens singles after beating American Robert Ginepri 6-4 2-6 6-1 6-2.

Day 10 promises more great action, as world number one Roger Federer takes on Swede Robin Soderling for a place in the last eight.

Whilst the opening match on Suzanne Lenglen sees Russians Elena Dementieva and Nadia Petrova go head-to-head.

Petrova defeated Venus Williams in straight sets in the previous round and so will fancy her chances against compatriot Dementieva who has not been at her best so far with persistent injuries a concern.
